EMDR Intensives - When the Past Keeps Showing Up in Your Present
Photo Description: Viewer can see the back of a person sitting with an Arizona canyon before them, backpack on their shoulders.
You messed up. Again. And the worst part is you can see exactly what happened. The past leaked in, right into the middle of something beautiful. Something you actually want to keep.
You are so tired of this. Tired of letting the ghosts of your past haunt you, tired of that old relationship getting to poke its head into your otherwise happy life. It is not fair, and you know it in your bones. And yet here you are again, wondering what is wrong with you.
Nothing is wrong with you. The past is just continuously impacting your present. And it does not have to be that way.
You want to let the past go. You want to feel good enough and stop bracing for the other shoe to slam into your face at any given moment you were actually happy. The happiness itself starts to feel dangerous, like it is only a matter of time before something unravels it.
And it is not just that one relationship that leaks its way into the present. It goes back further back into childhood. Patterns that have been running so long you do not even remember learning them. You look around at other people who did not have the best childhoods either, and they seem fine. So why is this still hitting you this hard?
You are a smart, capable, loving human. You know logically that you deserve good things. But in the moment, none of that matters. You turn, tuck tail, and it feels like your hair is on fire (or maybe even your whole body).
The person next to you has been so patient through all of it. And you feel like they deserve more than this. You deserve more than this.
You are ready to deal with the past that keeps coming up at the literal worst times. Maybe a little nervous. But mostly you are just ready for the past to stop infecting your life.
What is Still True Underneath it All
You have probably spent some time battling your demons. Maybe you have been in therapy before, thought you got past it, and now here it is again, bubbling up in your otherwise good relationship.
You are probably someone who has read the books, went to the meditation classes, does yoga or breathwork on the regular, and listens to the podcasts. You are showing up and dealing with this stuff in every capacity and every way that you can. You are in it for yourself and for your relationship because you want more out of life. That is part of what makes you, you.
You still know, somewhere in you, that you are capable of more than this pattern. You are not someone who gave up. You are someone who got tired of giving in to something that was never really yours to carry in the first place.
You have spent years perfecting your way through life on the outside. Holding it together at work, showing up for everyone around you, doing all the right things. And still, in the moments that should feel the happiest, something from the past reaches in and takes the wheel.
You are not broken. You are someone whose nervous system learned to protect you in ways that made sense once, and just never got the update that things have changed. The relationship you are in now is not the one that hurt you. But your body has not gotten that memo yet.
That is the part we can actually work on.
Who I Am and How I Help
Photo Description: Kandace Ledergerber, EMDR therapist in Phoenix, smiling outdoors among sunflowers.
I'm Kandace, a Licensed Professional Counselor and EMDR Certified therapist based in Tempe, and I work with high-achieving women in Tempe (and virtually throughout Arizona) who are killing it on the outside but feel like their past keeps sabotaging their relationships and their happiness. Through EMDR Intensives, we get to the root of what is keeping them stuck, without spending years in weekly therapy, so they can actually start living the life they have been working so hard for.
I help people deal with the past shit that won't stay in the past, so they can stop white-knuckling through life with their nervous system on fire. That is not a metaphor. That is what I watch happen in session, and that is what I watch change.
Most of the women I work with are smart, self-aware, and completely exhausted by the gap between what they know logically and what happens in their body the moment something triggers them. They have tried talking it through. They have done the reading, the journaling, the weekly sessions. And they still find themselves reacting in ways that do not match who they know themselves to be. That is not a personal failure. That is what unprocessed trauma does. It lives in the body, not just the mind, and talking alone does not always reach it.
For over ten years, I have worked with trauma survivors, and I have seen the shift that happens when we stop just processing thoughts and emotions and start working with the body too. That shift is real. It is research-backed. And it is what finally allows the past to stay where it belongs.
I bring warmth, directness, and zero patience for pretending the hard stuff is not hard. You do not have to be polished when you walk in. You do not have to have it together. You just have to be ready.
How EMDR Intensives Work
EMDR Intensives are extended therapy sessions, typically half-day or full-day formats, that allow us to go deeper and move faster than traditional weekly therapy. Instead of spending the first part of every session just getting back up to speed, we stay in it. We do the processing. We let things complete.
Clients often find that the intensive format leads to fewer overall therapy hours and significantly more momentum than the stop-and-go rhythm of week-to-week sessions. In an EMDR Intensive, we have the opportunity to work through:
The specific memories, relationships, and moments that keep getting activated in your current life
The nervous system patterns that fire before your brain even has a chance to catch up
The childhood roots that taught you to brace, shrink, or bail when things feel too good or too scary
The beliefs about yourself that have been running quietly in the background for years
Practical skills to help you feel like you are standing on solid ground
Depending on what feels right for you, I often weave in meditation, movement, and art into the intensive experience. This work is not one-size-fits-all, but is truly built around you.
What becomes possible on the other side is not erasing your past. It is more like the past stops having a vote in your present. The memories are still there, but they lose their activation. You stop reacting from the wound and start responding from who you actually are now. You begin living with the intentionality and purpose you have been craving, because the reasons you came to therapy for are no longer running your life.
This is not about rehashing everything that ever went wrong. It is about finally letting your nervous system catch up to the life you are already trying to live.
You Do Not Have To Be Stuck Anymore
You do not have to keep doing this on your own. Change is possible and not in a bumper sticker kind of way, but in a your-nervous-system-actually-learns-new-things way, because it does. EMDR is one of the most well-researched approaches available, and it works with your thoughts, your emotions, and your body together.
If you are ready to stop letting the past infect your present and start living the life you are actually craving, the next step is simple. Schedule a free consultation and let's find out if an EMDR Intensive in Tempe is the right fit for you.
You have been patient with yourself long enough. Let's get to work.
FAQ’s About EMDR Intensives
-
An EMDR Intensive is an extended therapy session, usually a half-day or full-day format, designed to allow for deeper and more continuous processing than traditional weekly therapy. In a typical weekly session, a significant portion of time gets spent re-orienting and warming back up to where you left off. In an Intensive, we stay in the work. That momentum makes a real difference, and many clients find they move through more in one Intensive than they have in months of weekly sessions. It is not a shortcut; it is just a more efficient use of your time and energy.

Many of the women I work with have already done some form of therapy and still feel like something is stuck. That is actually a very common experience (especially when it comes to trauma), and it does not mean therapy failed you. It often means the work has not yet reached the place where the trauma actually lives, which is in the body and nervous system, not just in your thoughts.
EMDR is specifically designed to work at that level. If you have done the reading, the journaling, the weekly sessions, and you are still finding yourself triggered in ways that do not make sense to you, an EMDR Intensive may be exactly what you have been missing.

Pros
* Intensives can provide a focused time for the therapy process, which can allow for faster progress. The time you might spend talking about your week and ending a session is a smaller fraction of the time - which leads to more time focused on the deeper stuff.
* If you already have some solid regulation skills and don't need weekly support OR are working actively with a talk therapist, this type of therapy can help you break through trauma barriers.
* Intensives are easier to schedule if you already have a full plate but still want to work on your healing journey.
* Intensives can provide a space to work on healing in a BIG way
Cons
* Intensives are a financial and emotional investment. They are a lot of work, but you can also get a lot out of them if they fit you.
* EMDR can feel physically different and even demanding. Spending 75-90 minutes at a time sitting and doing this kind of work can be a lot. We take breaks often and work to titrate in and out of the heavier stuff to help your nervous system feel the most balanced that it can.
* Defense mechanisms (or what I like to call coping strategies) will come up during long therapy sessions. It can be powerful to work through these, but it can also be tough.
* We may or may not get to the big trauma you want to process in one fell swoop. Every person and every intensive is different. It is my goal for every client to feel safe and heard in their process and find movement that feels good to them. That being said - I unfortunately don't have a crystal ball to predict what will come up when we are re-processing.
-
Intensives can vary depending on your needs and goals. Sessions are typically structured as half-day or full-day formats. During your free consultation, we will talk through what makes the most sense for where you are and what you are hoping to work through. The goal is always to give you enough time and space to do meaningful work without pushing past what your nervous system can integrate.
-
Most clients describe it as surprisingly different from what they expected. It is not about retelling your story over and over. Nor is it about staying in the hard stuff for 3-7 hours straight.
It’s more like we locate the places where things got stuck and work to help your nervous system process and release them, at a pace that feels good for your nervous system.
Some clients feel emotional during the work, others notice physical sensations, and many describe a sense of something settling or shifting by the end. It is deep work, and it can also feel like relief. Every person's experience is a little different, which is why the work is always tailored to you.

I offer limited slots of in-person EMDR intensives located in Tempe on Sundays.
I also can offer virtual intensives as long as the client is located in either Arizona or Florida (as that is where I hold a license).

Depending on what feels right for you, I often weave in meditation, movement, and art as part of the intensive experience. These are not add-ons for the sake of variety. They are tools that help the nervous system process and integrate in ways that pure talk or bilateral stimulation alone sometimes cannot reach. Everything we incorporate is guided by what you need and what resonates with you.
-
That is completely normal, and it does not mean you are not ready. Most of the women I work with feel some version of nervous before their first session. The consultation is a low-pressure conversation, not a commitment. It is a chance for you to ask questions, get a feel for whether we are a good fit, and decide from there. You do not have to have it all figured out before you reach out.
Types of EMDR Intensives and Payment Plans
-

3-Hour Intensive with Optional 90-Minute Foundational Session
A focused, single-session deep dive when you need concentrated time to move through something specific. An optional 90-minute foundation session is available beforehand for those who want to get to know each other and build a plan before diving in, though many prefer to jump straight into the work. Continuous reprocessing time lets your nervous system get further than a string of 60-minute sessions typically allows.
Out-of-network benefits can often help offset the cost, and we'll help you check and submit through Mentaya.
Payment plans are available through Klarna and Affirm. Approval is determined by Klarna and Affirm, not by my practice, so I’m not able to guarantee approval.
You may also use your HSA/FSA funds.
The 3-Hour Intensive is $500, plus an optional $250 Foundational session.

7.5 Hour Intensive with 90-Minute Foundational Session
A full day format built for people whose story needs more room. This one includes the 90-minute foundation session up front to map what we're working with and build the plan, then moves into extended reprocessing time. This structure gives your system space to work through more than one layer without the stop-start of weekly sessions.
Out-of-network benefits can often help offset the cost, and we'll help you check and submit through Mentaya.
Payment plans are available through Klarna and Affirm. Approval is determined by Klarna and Affirm, not by my practice, so I’m not able to guarantee approval.

The 7.5-Hour Intensive is $1,500 total, including the foundation session.
